A NIGHT FOR CHRISTY
Originally published here
The cream of the Irish music industry came out in force on 21 June to raise funds for the medical expenses of Christy Dignam, front man for Irish legendary rock band, Aslan.
Acts sang the Aslan song of their choice, accompanied by the band themselves, and included such performers as Bressie, Mary Black, Markus Feehily, and in a link from New York, U2.
A controversial addition to the night’s line-up, which provoked much debate via social media during the previous fortnight, was Irish pop duo, Jedward. Aslan fans needn’t have worried, as the Dublin twins pulled off “She’s So Beautiful” in a performance that won over everybody, critics and fans alike.
Christy Dignam is suffering from a rare form of blood cancer, and it was feared he would not be able to attend, but he defied the odds and not only came, but led the band and all the night’s performers in a rousing rendition of “Crazy World”.
Christy’s daughter Kiera, who herself performed, spoke about her father:
“The last couple of days he’s been in great form, and during the rehearsals he looked great.
“We were a bit concerned that by the time the gig came around he might struggle a bit, but he’s loving it all.”
The show was a sellout for Dublin’s Olympia Theatre, and was broadcast in pubs throughout Ireland and the world. Demand was so high that the event was streamed online, with donations to support Christy being encouraged.
Jedward called for everyone to buy an Aslan CD or download to help get the band back into the Irish charts. Aslan’s music is available on iTunes.
